Is Your Child Punished for ADHD Behavior at School?

My ADD/ADHD daughter, Natalie, recently faced the possibility of in-school suspension and losing recess because of her symptoms. How do you work with teachers and school administrators if your child is labeled the "behavior problem" student?

My daughter, Natalie, who has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD) and learning disabilities, came home from school a few weeks ago and said that she was in big trouble. She’d had her first ever major outburst at school. Her special education teacher had been gone that day, but she said another teacher told her that because of her behavior, she would probably have in-school suspension the...

ADHD and Omega-3s: An Effective Treatment for ADHD Kids?

My daughter, Natalie, who has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), doesn't mind taking omega-3 supplements as an alternative treatment for her symptoms. But can fish oil really help ADHD children manage outbursts and inattentiveness?

As we talked through my daughter Natalie’s recent increases in agitation and aggressive behavior at our last psychologist visit, the doctor asked me, “Does Natalie take fish oil supplements?” He explained how omega-3 containing fish oil is believed to help some symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), in terms of brain science, and that it may help medications work more effectively. “Um, not regularly,” I admitted,...

Medicating ADHD Children and Parenting Guilt

My ADD/ADHD daughter has been having recurring emotional outbursts. Increasing her medication seems like the best way to treat this symptom. But how can I let go of the guilt and shame that comes with medicating my ADHD child?

After a long period of relative calm, my daughter, Natalie, has recently been having more episodes of out-of-control behavior fueled by her attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD). Meltdowns, like the ones she’s having now, were once regular occurrences at home and sometimes in public places. While hard to deal with, I was always grateful for one thing: She never had behavior problems at school. Sure, she...

Can't Stop Skin Picking?

My daughter, Natalie, who has ADHD and anxiety, compulsively picks her skin to cope with social anxiety. But we've tried the following alternatives to get her to stop picking.

My daughter, Natalie, who has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD), seemed to buzz with anxiety one morning last week. She woke up at 5:30. She was too nervous to eat. And she picked and squeezed her skin and made herself bleed in at least four or five spots. I couldn’t keep the Band-Aids coming fast enough! Why was she so anxious that particular day? Her fourth-grade...

Help for Children With Social Problems, No Friends

My daughter, Natalie, who has ADD/ADHD, has trouble making neurotypical friends her own age. Her solution to her social problems: start playing with younger kids, who like the attention from an older child. Is there any reason I should be worried about this?

Natalie and I were outside last night when a mom and her three kids, who recently moved to our neighborhood, walked up to our house. Two of the kids were holding copies of my picture book, Dog Tales: The Adventures of Smyles, for me to sign. Natalie chatted them up while I went into the house to find a blue Sharpie. She kept up the conversation...
