In Sports, and Life, Can Determination Help ADHD Kids Overcome the Challenges of Inattention?

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD) interferes with my daughter Natalie's ability to focus, but, what she lacks in ability to pay attention, she makes up for in determination.

Parenting ADHD Children blogger Kay Marner is mother to an ADHD daughter in Ames, Iowa
Determination helped her learn to tie her shoes. With persistence, she overcame poor balance and coordination to be able to ride her bike before her fifth birthday. And from her first year of preschool through today, Natalie’s teachers have said that, despite the ants in her pants, the scabs she just has to pick, and her anxiety’s overblown worries, she consistently tries her hardest...

Flying with ADHD Children: Is Good Behavior Possible?

Traveling with an attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD) child can be challenging. But instead of having to sit still and behave for several hours on the plane -- or get in trouble for not doing so -- one ADD/ADHD boy made friends, made his parents proud, and had a great flight!

Last week was spring break for our school system, and my daughter Natalie’s best friend and ADD/ADHD-soul mate, Harry, went to Puerto Rico with his mom and dad. (You can read more about Natalie and Harry's ADD/ADHD adventures in an earlier post.) The best story to come out of that trip wasn’t Harry’s nasty sunburn, nor was it the fun he had learning to boogie board...

What Are Realistic Expectations for ADD/ADHD Children's Progress at School?

With goals designed for the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD) student, an individualized education program (IEP) that works, and parental support, our kids can surprise us with their successes!

It’s parent-teacher conference season again, and even though I keep in contact with Natalie’s special education and classroom teachers throughout the school year, those darn meetings still have the power to surprise me. The surprise we received at Natalie’s fall conference was the unwelcome kind -- disappointing news. Don and I both left that meeting feeling shell-shocked and sad. Natalie, we were told,...

Playing Outdoors to Improve ADD/ADHD Symptoms in Children?

My daughter's occupational therapist taught me that “heavy work” has a calming and organizing effect on kids with ADD/ADHD and sensory processing issues. And, I know from experience that being outside is therapeutic for Natalie.

The lengthening days and the melting snow have me believing that I just might come out of Iowa’s winter prison alive, after all. Natalie, who struggles to find outlets for her excess ADHD-energy during the winter months, seems to feel this even more strongly. Starting about a week ago, when the daytime highs finally neared the freezing mark, and it stayed light past 5:00 p.m., Natalie...

Adjusting My Daughter's ADHD Medication, Again: The Emotional Side Effects for Parents

Here's a side effect of ADD/ADHD medications no one tells you about: the emotional toll it takes on parents. We get excited, hopeful, at the prospects of finding the exact right treatment, then feel the inevitable let-down of having to adjust a dosage yet again.

Natalie is now seeing a child psychiatrist to treat her attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD), and along with the new doctor came more changes in medicines. A blood test showed that Nat’s fasting blood glucose level was high, a possible unwanted side effect of Risperdal. Her “bad” cholesterol (LDL) was also high, and she’d started having episodes of compulsive eating. Her weight, although...

Finding the Right Child Psychiatrist to Treat ADHD

My ADD/ADHD daughter's pediatrician told us it was time to take her to a child psychiatrist. Before our first visit I expected the worst.

A few months ago, Natalie’s pediatrician Dr. Halbur told us that it was time. I didn’t want to do it, but I knew he was right. Treating Natalie’s attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD) and co-existing conditions (anxiety, sensory processing disorder, prenatal exposure to alcohol) had become complex enough to necessitate seeing a child psychiatrist. I’m not sure what my hesitation to take...

Adventures in Parenting: Do ADD/ADHD Kids Always Learn the Life Lessons We Want Them to?

A mom shares her experiences with high-energy children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD). Are they too strong-willed, impulsive, or distracted to learn lessons?

On page 28 of the Spring 2010 issue of ADDitude magazine, there’s a story about Natalie’s best friend, Harry! Harry, like Nat, has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD). In the piece, Harry’s mom, Victoria, chronicles her experience taking Harry on RAGBRAI, the (Des Moines, Iowa) Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa, “the oldest, largest, and longest bicycle touring event in the world." Add hottest, and...
