Prenatal Iron Intake Linked to Autism

Is the recommended amount of daily iron for pregnant and nursing mothers too low? This study suggests that fetuses and newborns may need more than 27 mg per day.

A new study indicates that mothers with lower iron intake during pregnancy and breastfeeding may be more likely to have children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The study, carried out by the UC Davis School of Medicine, was the first to investigate the link between iron intake and ASD. Previous studies have found similar links between folic acid intake and ASD. The research drew a connection...

New Tourette’s Treatment? Understanding the Brain Chemical that Controls Tics

New research suggests a link between a brain chemical and the tics commonly associated with Tourette’s syndrome. Scientists are hopeful that new treatments will follow.

Nearly half of children with ADHD have an underlying tic disorder, like Tourette’s. What’s more, as many as 90% of people with Tourette’s also have ADHD. Parents of kids with ADHD already know that medications can help regulate the neurotransmitters that falter in the brain’s management system and cause attention and hyperactivity problems. Now, scientists may be on the brink of a similar treatment discovery for...

Therapy: The Critical ADHD Treatment We’re Withholding from Our Kids

According to a new study, only one-quarter of children with ADHD are getting the therapeutic help they need to manage symptoms, develop better behavior, and learn to thrive with attention deficit.

What's the hands-down best treatment for ADHD kids? Still, there is a one-size-fits-all first treatment that ADHD experts recommend for all children: therapy. According to the new AAP guidelines, the first line of treatment for children aged 4 to 5 should...

Why Recess Is Non-Negotiable for ADHD Kids

A new study confirms the positive impact of exercise on the behavior, focus and mood of children with attention deficit disorder.

As if we needed more proof that taking away recess is a counterproductive punishment, a new study indicates that exercising every day can actually help ADHD children focus better in class. The study, recently published in the Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology, selected 202 children between the ages of 4 and 9 — about half of whom were "at risk" for ADHD. The students were...

Increased Diagnoses of ADHD and Autism in Higher-Income Families

Better awareness and detection of neurodevelopmental disorders may explain the jump in diagnoses.

The number of children with developmental conditions, such as autism and ADHD, increased by 28 percent for some families, a new study shows. Led by Dr. Amy Houtrow at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, the two-year project found that poor homes have the highest known rates of intellectual and physical disabilities in children. The study also found that reports of pediatric mental health and neurodevelopmental disorders...
