Growing Out of ADHD

Q:

"My 15-year-old has been fine without medication for the past two months. Is it possible that he has outgrown AD/HD?"

Dr. Larry Silver specializes in treating children with attention deficit disorder (ADHD).
A:

Although the reasons are unclear, some adolescents do seem to outgrow the need for medication. I suggest keeping him off, but monitor him closely as the school year progresses. If symptoms return, he should restart medication. His doctor can determine whether a lower dose may be sufficient.
