Finding Reliable Help

Q:

"Who can best diagnose ADD — psychiatrists, psychologists, or therapists?"

Dr. Larry Silver specializes in treating children with attention deficit disorder (ADHD).
A:

Any mental health professional can diagnose ADHD if he or she follows the guidelines and criteria. Some are more experienced than others. A psychiatrist is the physician with the most experience with ADHD and medications to treat ADHD.

If your psychiatrist is yielding to you and what you learn to determine medication, I would suggest seeing someone else. This does suggest less knowledge than you want with the professional treating you.

Larry Silver, M.D., is clinical professor of psychiatry at Georgetown Medical Center in Washington, D.C. and director of training in child and adolescent psychiatry at Georgetown University School of Medicine. He is a former acting director and deputy director of the National Institute of Mental Health, as well as the author of Dr. Larry Silver's Advice to Parents on AD/HD and The Misunderstood Child: Understanding and Coping with Your Child's Learning Disabilities.
