As a reading specialist, I tell my students, “If you don’t like to read, it’s because you haven’t found the right book.” Personal interest is the key to developing a passion for reading that builds life-long skills. These offerings will help a child find and develop her personal interests.

A MAGAZINE SUBSCRIPTION about your child’s passion. This isn’t a book, but it’s at the top of the list to make a point: Any kind of reading is reading. The most important thing you can do to build life-long literacy skills is to nurture a passion for reading by connecting to your child’s passions.

WHAT COLOR IS YOUR PARACHUTE FOR TEENS? by Carol Christen. A spinoff of the popular book for adults, this book will help a teen discover himself.

THE 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE TEENS, by Sean Covey. Ask any adult who read the original book, and they’ll tell you that they wish they had those insights earlier in life. I’ve read both books and found this version to be more engaging.

WONDER, by R.J. Palacio. A novel about a fifth-grader with a facial deformity who wants to be treated like any other kid. Many students will be able to see themselves in this story.
