Transition Goals for IEP

Q:

"I am working with a high school student who will graduate soon. Her parents are wondering what type of transition goals to put in the IEP. She wants to go to a community college after graduation. She is a student with ADD." - PJP, Iowa

A:

Transition strategies should include testing accommodations based on her need. They may include additional time on testing, preferential seating in a large lecture class, additional time on written tests. Match her abilities to the accommodations.

Suggest parents have a educational battery done prior to community college to help see her strengths and weaknesses. It is easier to write a plan when you know what she can and cannot do.

Dr. Clare Jones was an educational consultant in Scottsdale, Arizona, respected throughout the psychological community for her work with ADHD children and adults. She passed away in late 2006 and is truly missed.
